Christina Langman (nee Toews) was born in 1983 and was raised in various
places around Alberta, where from a young age she aspired to be an artist.
Right from the time she was old enough to hold a pencil, she was drawing
animals of all sorts, including wildlife, horses, big cats (and little
cats), dogs, and even people (even if they were just stick men!). She
is mostly self taught in her art, although she's had some inspiring teachers
through her high school art classes. Mrs. Nancy Hansen (art teacher at
the J.C. Charyk School in Hanna, AB until 1998) was her first art teacher,
and taught her many techniques and basics in painting and drawing, as well
as took time out of her evening schedule to teach Christina private classes.
Unfortunately, she retired as Christina finished Grade 9. Mr. Greg
Pyra (art teacher at the J.C. Charyk School in Hanna, AB 1998-present) took
her place, and although he was quite a different teacher than Christina was
used to, she learned some valuable lessons from him in her high school art
classes. Mr. Pyra helped her develop her technique for drawing pencil
portraits of people, and continues to be a big fan and critic of her work.
Christina graduated Valedictorian of her J.C. Charyk High School class in
2001.
As an active member of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Art Association (SWAA),
Christina competes in their annual art competition and exhibition
"Reflections of
Nature", held every fall in Saskatoon, SK. In 2005,
"Serenity"
(colored pencil snow leopard) caught everyone's attention as her first entry
into a professional competition. The artwork took 2nd Best in Show in
the Intermediate skill level, as well as First in Class and Best in
Division. Now competing in the Open skill level, Christina took 1st Best in Show
in 2006 with her "Leopard's Eye" miniature, and was successful
in 2007 too. Not only had she been invited to judge for the show (Juniors, 2006) but she has even been invited to put
on a workshop on how to do "Eyes in Clayboard", and it was a lot of fun! This coming year, she will teach a workshop on colored pencil technique.
As well as participating in the SWAA, Christina is an active member in the Regina Federation of Artists (RFA) in
Regina, SK, and a previous member of the Prairie Artists Guild (PAG) also in
Regina. Both guilds hold numerous shows throughout the year in Regina,
and are active in the community.
Being a professional full time artist has always been Christina's dream, and
now she is able to achieve that dream and work on her art each and every
day. Working mostly in colored pencils and more recently in
scratchboard and clayboard with acrylic paints, she strives for stunning
photo-realism in her work, catching the very essence of each animal she
portrays. The use of a variety of media helps her achieve the ultimate
in photo-realism. "The best compliment I can receive is for my artwork
to be mistaken for a photo" says Christina.
Christina and Scott were married on June 25th, 2005, in Regina, and in May 2007 they (and their numerous pets!) moved to a BRAND NEW HOUSE in Regina's booming east end.
Although the move and the new yard took up a lot of her time, Christina's enjoying finally having a whole room as an art studio - no more working on the living room couch!
Thankfully, Scott is still working as an electrical engineer,
which is the main reason Christina can pursue her art fulltime, even when
not making a steady income! Scott is also an aspiring musician who
writes and records his own music, playing the guitar and singing.
